How did you get started as a Virtual Assistant & Business Administrator?
When I was in high school my mother taught me how to use Photoshop, and as an elder millennial I know how to use basic computer programs like Word Processessing and PowerPoint. I graduated high school in 2002, but I did not know back then that I would be good at being a VA.
I went on to study for a BA in Theatre from the University of Washington and attained a 4 year degree in just 3 years. In college I discovered my intuitive abilities, which sent me down a life long path of interest, educaion, and practice in Holistic Health & Wellness. A few years after college, I decided I wanted to work in Child Care instead of Theatre. I had worked at a preschool while I was in high school and I had younger siblings, so in 2008 I started a very exciting full time career in Child Care. However, one full time Child Care career wasn’t adaquately paying for life in Seattle WA, so I took on side jobs.
In 2010 I owned my own holistic spa for a short time. I could not afford to pay someone to do all my business admin work for me, so I taught myself how to do it ALL. I made a website, I made marketing material, I leased a space, I managed rentals, I taught meditation classes, etc. People were very impressed I had made all of my own marketing material and my website, and friends and family started to ask me to design for them too. It was just a hobby at first. I designed business cards, flyers, websites, and tattoos for other people who could not afford expensive designers.
I attained a Masters in Holistic Business Administration in 2015. I was the first student to graduate from Aphrodite University, a business school for holistic entrepreneurs, coaches, and practitioners. For a short time I tried to start a Life Coaching practice, but working for myself on the computer and working full-time in Child Care was a lot. Maybe I needed to pick one, but perhaps my degree in business could help me make more at my day job. In 2019 I was promoted to Administrative Assistant at the preschool where I worked, and I graduated with a BA in Early Care & Education from the University of Washington after working full time and being a full time student for 2 years!
Some of my side jobs after 2019 included being a VA type admin assistant for holistic companies my friends operated such as Guided By The Heart: Adventure Tours & Relationship Coaching, ThriveWise LLC & MeWe Fairs, and Good For Chocolate.
In 2022 I went from being a preschool teacher to being a nanny. Nannies in Seattle can make signifacantly more than preschool teachers. To improve my VA skills for my side jobs, I enrolled in a program called 90 Day VA, with Esther Inman, for some education about this career. In 2023 I participated in some Financial Freedom education with Daniel Mangena, and I learned about my Money DNA. I discovered that being a VA and Business Administrator for holistic wellness companies was more in alignment with how I naturally make money. After my first nanny contract ended in 2023, when the children I cared for went to school, I decided to be a Virtual Assistnat and Business Administrator instead of a Child Care worker.
